Most Breakdowns Give Warning Signs First

Downtime on a construction site doesn't just cost the day a machine sits broken. It cascades — a stalled excavator delays the crew waiting to pour concrete, which delays the next trade scheduled behind them, which eventually shows up as a penalty clause in a contract nobody wanted to trigger.

Reactive maintenance — fixing things after they break — typically costs three to four times more than addressing the same issue early, once labor, parts expedited at premium prices, and lost production time are all counted. A predictive approach b*ased on real sensor data instead of fixed calendar intervals catches problems while they're still cheap repairs rather than expensive emergencies.
A fleet manager running a quarry operation in Oman shared a clear example: a gradual rise in hydraulic temperature on a wheel loader, caught by sensor a*lerts three weeks before any visible symptom, was traced to a clogged cooler that cost four hundred dollars to clean. Left unaddressed, the same fault would likely have cooled into a seized pump costing closer to six thousand dollars to replace, plus a week of downtime waiting for parts.

Calendar-b*ased servicing assumes every machine works the same amount between services, which is rarely true on a site with mixed shift patterns. A generator running continuously on a twenty-four-hour site logs far more wear in a month than the same model used only during day shifts elsewhere.
